Age Action Calls for Stakeholder Engagement on the State Pension Proposals

(Saturday 23 July2022)

Age Action welcomes the Taoiseach’s announcement of a plan to allow flexible access to the State Pension, but care is needed to ensure that the proposals are fair and do not reinforce existing inequalities in the system. Extensive stakeholder engagement is now needed on these new proposals.

Why We Need a Commissioner for Ageing and Older Persons

(15 June 2022)  On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Age Action is reiterating the call for the establishment of a Commissioner for Ageing and Older Persons, with a supporting legal framework, that will ensure that we are all treated with respect and on an equal basis with the rest of the population in older age.

3,871 notifications of abuse for persons aged over 65 was reported in the HSE’s National Safeguarding Report 2021. Immediate family members are identified as the person of concern in reported cases of abuse of people over the age of 65.

International Day for Tolerance - Call on Government to enact promised legislation against hate

(16 November 2021) Today on International Tolerance Day, Age Action, as a member of the Coalition Against Hate Crime, joined 19 other organisations, academics and individuals representing communities commonly targeted by hate crime and discrimination have called on the government to enact promised legislation against hate and to make ending hate crimes a national priority.  The Oireachtas Justice Committee will hear from several of these organisations at its first hearing on the Hate Crime Bill on Wednesday.

Hate crimes are existing crimes motivated by hatred against people because of their actual or perceived membership of a particular group. They are message crimes, intended to frighten, intimidate and silence entire communities. Society as a whole suffers as a result, yet Ireland has no laws to protect our communities from these crimes.

Budget Chases the Cost of Living But Age Action Worried About Further Price Rises Next Year

(12 October 2021) Reacting to Budget 2022, Age Action welcomes the Government’s recognition that older people have been left behind for three years while the cost of living has gone up, but €5 on the State Pension will replace less than half of the €10.24 that the State Pension has lost in purchasing power since January 2019. The increase of €3 in the Living Alone allowance is welcome as it will assist the 4 in 10 older people who live alone.

State Pension is worth €542 per year less in 2021 than in January 2019. State Pension Should be Increased by €15 in Budget 2022

(11 October 2021) When the rising cost of goods and services is taken into account, the State Pension is worth €542 per year less at the end of 2021 compared to January 2019*. In January 2019, the rate of the State Pension was €248.30. This has not changed since, while the Consumer Price Index has risen by 4.3% due to increases in the cost of goods and services to consumers. In advance of Budget 2022, Age Action has reiterated its call for the Government to demonstrate its commitment to the State Pension in Budget 2022 by increasing the rate by €15 plus a proportionate increase in income thresholds used for eligibility for the Medical Card and other means-tested services.

Time to Reframe How we Think, Feel and Act about Older People and Ageing

(Monday 27 September) is the start of Positive Ageing Week 2021 which is themed Reconnecting Our Communities by Reframing Ageing to challenge negative stereotypes of ageing and older people.

The portrayal of older people as vulnerable, frail, in need of care and protection that characterised public discourse during COVID-19 reflected negative stereotypes we hold about older people.
