What is advocacy
Age Action engages in advocacy campaigns in order to influence public policy on behalf of older people.
Our advocacy and policy work is grounded in the lived experience of growing older in Ireland people.
We consult with our members on specific policy issues throughout the year via a number of different methods including regional members meetings, the distribution of surveys, contacts to our information line and through our network of older people.
Part of the remit of Age Action is to advocate Government and other bodies with and on behalf of older people. We have grown to become the leading advocacy organisation for older people.
Budget 2026
Age Action recommendations for Budget 2026 focus on two main themes:
Firstly, ensuring that older people both now, and into the future, have an adequate income in old age.
We’re calling for the State Pension to be increased in line with growing incomes in Ireland, for targeted supports for older people particularly vulnerable to poverty, in particular, those living alone, and for better use of tax expenditure to incentivise younger people to invest in supplementary pensions/
Secondly, we recommend measures to advance the goal of allowing us all to age well at home, and receive the care we need there.
Many people were horrified at the failures in care in nursing homes revealed by RTE Investigates earlier this year. Budget 2026 can make concrete steps to advance the goal of delivering a quality and safe statutory homecare scheme, which respects the rights of older people.
