The new Bill is an inadequate response to the growing demand for the abolition of mandatory retirement.

According to Dr Nat O’Connor, Age Action’s Senior Policy Adviser: “Age Action strongly opposes the revival of the Employment (Restriction of Certain Mandatory Retirement Ages). Bill 2024, which is an inadequate response to the growing demand for the abolition of mandatory retirement.”

Age Action says party manifestos ‘prepare to fail’ for Ireland’s ageing population

According to Dr Nat O’Connor, Age Action’s Senior Policy Adviser: “There are already over 1.1 million people aged 60 or older and, in the lifetime of the next government, 2025-2029, there will be an extra 135,000 people aged 60 and older, including an extra 47,000 aged 80 and older. Yet, none of the political parties have a comprehensive plan to prepare Ireland to meet the needs of its ageing population”.

Where are the Policies for Older People in General Election 2024?

Reacting to the first weeks of the 2024 general election campaign, Age Action is asking all political parties and candidates to make clear what they will do to meet the needs and concerns of older people, to uphold the rights and equality of all of us as we age, and to combat ageism.

Dr Nat O’Connor, senior policy adviser, said: “In this general election, nearly one in three voters will be aged 60 or older, yet older people are telling Age Action that they haven’t heard meaningful discussion of policies addressing their concerns.”

Age Action welcomes enhanced fuel allowance for those aged 66+, but regrets state pension lost spending power and lack of supports for those living alone.

Reacting to Budget 2025, which fell on the International Day of Older Persons, Age Action’s policy adviser Nat O’Connor said “An additional €12 for those in receipt of a full state pension will help some older people to cover their weekly costs, but it means that for yet another budget cycle the state has failed to restore the state pension to the value it had in 2020.

Gas Networks Ireland is raising money for Age Action. If you’ve recently called their contact centre or had work done by them, you might receive a text from Gas Networks asking for your feedback. For every response received, they’ll donate €2 to Age Action. There is no obligation to participate.

Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr. Collette Finn Officially Opens Age Action's New Cork Office

Cork, Ireland, 8th November – Age Action, Ireland’s leading advocacy organisation for older people and ageing, is delighted to announce the official opening of its new Cork office at Core House Link Road, Ballincollig, Cork. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was conducted by Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr. Collette Finn on 8th November, ushering in a new era of possibilities for the organisation.
