Public urged to continue supporting their older neighbours during cold snap

Age Action is urging the general public to continue supporting older people in their community so that they do not have to venture out during the current freezing weather.

“The response to date from the public has been fantastic, with communities rallying around to bring supplies of food, fuel and medicine to older people through the pro-longed freezing weather earlier this month, but it is important that complacency does not set in now as these visits could literally be life-saving trips,” Age Action spokesman Eamon Timmins said.

Tonight’s Prime Time Investigates documentary highlights the urgent and long standing need for regulation, standards and auditing of the home help service, according to Age Action.

“The shocking scenes broadcast this evening using undercover cameras are the consequence of what happens when there is no regulation of a vital service to vulnerable people,” Age Action spokesman Eamon Timmins said.

The older people’s charity has campaigned for many years for measures to ensure that vulnerable older people are protected.

Age Action, Muintir na Tire and SVP combine to help older people during cold weather

Age Action has teamed up with the Society of St Vincent de Paul and Muintir na Tire to provide a helpline for older people who are house-bound by the current ice and snow and who need a volunteer to bring them essential supplies.

The three groups have come together to provide a network of volunteers in communities across Ireland who can respond to older people who may be facing difficulties.
