Age Action Ireland

Let us know your experience of the Fair Deal

Age Action, the older people’s charity, is seeking the public’s assistance to gauge the impact of the “Fair Deal” nursing home payment scheme since its introduction.

We are gathering people’s experience of the new scheme, whether they are older people, are relatives of older people, run or work in nursing homes, or are healthcare workers.

We would like people to share their experiences of the scheme (good and bad, seen and unforeseen), since it was introduced last October.

Bogus callers using “big freeze” to rob older people

Age Action has urged older people to take basic security precautions when responding to callers to their homes, in the wake of a series of robberies by bogus callers following the prolonged spell of cold weather.

The charity made the call after it became aware of a number of robberies carried out by thieves calling to older people’s homes, claiming to local authority workmen investigating frozen pipes, or caring neighbours providing help during the cold weather.

Age Action concerned at failure to adequately investigate elder abuse allegations at nursing home

Age Action has expressed serious concern at the findings of a HIQA inspection into St. Joseph’s Community Nursing Unit in Trim, Co. Meath. It found that three allegations of elder abuse against a nurse were not adequately investigated in accordance with HSE procedures. The nurse concerned remained on duty until two further allegations of abuse were made.

SVP and Age Action team up to help older people struggling to cope during big freeze

The Society of St Vincent de Paul and Age Action have teamed up to help older people who may be experiencing serious difficulties as a result of the prolonged cold weather.

Volunteers from both charities are to be deployed to contact older people who are house bound by the freezing conditions and, without any visitors, may be running out of food, medical and fuel supplies.

Public urged to make visiting an older person a priority today

Age Action is urging people who have an unscheduled day off work today to take the opportunity to check in on older people in their community who may be experiencing serious difficulties as a result of the prolonged cold weather.

Public urged to visit older people as longest cold snap in 45 years continues

Age Action has urged communities to step up their vigilance regarding their older neighbours, friends and relatives, as the longest cold snap in 45 years continues.
