Getting Started
Getting Started is a training programme for older people to encourage and help them to use computers and the internet. Classes are run by volunteer tutors with small groups of learners, in local, non formal learning settings.
We have designed training material suitable for older people and learners who need plenty of support and encouragement. Our training guide ‘Simple Steps to Success: A Guide to Using Computers’ provides very basic, practical guidance for people new to computers and the internet.
All our tutors are volunteers. Almost 500 volunteers have been involved with the programme, people of all ages, from all walks of lives who want to share their skills with older people. Volunteers teach people the basics of computer use, how to search the internet, how to set up an email account and how to send and receive emails. Courses run for 6 weeks, one session per week. Classes are between one and a half to two hours in duration.
Getting Started runs classes in Dublin, Galway, Cork, Clare and Waterford. Our classes are held in a range of venues in each area including libraries, community centres, schools, colleges and day/residential care centres.
