Case Histories

  • James was referred to the Care and Repair Programme by his social worker. Prior to coming home from hospital, his bedroom needed to be cleared of furniture (to enable professional fitters to lay a new carpet). Volunteers moved the furniture, replaced two partially rotten floorboards, and – in passing - repaired a faulty vacuum cleaner!
  • A community worker contacted us about a client whose back yard was in a very bad state. We organised a skip (the cost of which was covered by the client) and spent a busy Saturday morning clearing overgrown vegetation and miscellaneous junk, as well as erecting a new washing line for the lady concerned.
  • A client named Eleanor phoned up, seeking assistance moving from one flat to another. Our volunteers spent two afternoons at this work, including helping Eleanor to organise her belongings within her new home and to settle in. Subsequently, a regular visit was arranged to keep up the friendship established with Eleanor arising from this job.
  • An occupational therapist contacted us, asking if we could fit handrails on a client’s stairs and in his bathroom. Our handyperson was able to respond rapidly to this request.
  • Mary had a problem with a jamming lock on her hall door. Our handyperson assessed the job and recommended that a new lock be fitted. He was able to complete the work for Mary and she refunded us the cost of the materials required.
  • Sheila was the victim of an incompetent tradesman. Her kitchen cabinet doors could not open properly, due to faulty fitting. Our handyperson was able to dismantle the units and re-erect them correctly.
